Smelly Jelly Crystals

Back Next

Smelly Jelly Crystals, also known as "smelly jelly air fresheners" are tiny dry crystals used to make water based air fresheners. They were originally developed to help soil retain water in drought conditions because they are able to retain hundreds of times their weight in water and expand into clear gel crystals. Other uses of Aqua Crystals are Cool Ties, aroma therapy smelly jellies, decorative candles, jelly baths, pet cooling mats, water crystals, artificial fish aquariums, hot packs, cold packs, paraffin bath replacement, and novelty lighted ice cubes. Using them is simple. Follow the instructions below and create your own projects! For beautiful water based dyes to use with your water crystals, click here.

Smelly-Jelly Jars and Lids

Jars and lids are ordered separately and the lids come in many colors. The disks at the bottom of list are so that the contents don't spill out of the jar and also so that your product stays smelling fresh. We advise against using 2 1/2" round labels as the label may become wet and fall off the lid. Note: Plastic may melt when it comes in contact with smelly jelly, so don't fill the jar too full.

Materials Needed:

1. 16 oz. Distilled Water
2. 2-4 Tablespoons (1 - 2 oz.) Water Soluble Fragrance Oil
3. 1 Teaspoon Aqua Crystals (there are approx. 70 teaspoons per pound of crystals)
Food Coloring or our "Water Based Dyes"
4. A Pinch of Salt

1. Mix all ingredients and allow to sit for several hours. The Smelly Jelly crystals will soak up the water and expand into little gel-    like pieces
2. Wait a few hours until all liquid has been absorbed

Makes enough to fill 2 x 8 oz. Jelly Jars with Smelly Jelly

The addition of a "pinch" of salt has been said to help preservation and stop the milkiness that can sometimes occur over time

You can also use smelly jelly in potpourri warmers for an even stronger scent!

Here's a recipe to make your own water based fragrance oil:

Materials Needed:

1/2 to 1 oz. Fragrance oil of your choice
1 oz. Emulsifying Agent (PS-20) Oils, Liquids, Creams, and Waxes C - F
16 oz. Distilled Water

Add Fragrance Oil or Essential Oil to Emulsifying Agent and mix well. Then add Distilled water and blend well. You now have a water based fragrance or essential oil.

This is an approximate measure and you should conduct your own experiments, depending upon the strength you want your fragrance to be.
